A Christmas Thought
I was recently contemplating a verse of Scripture that most Christians learn as children in Sunday School and all of the Christian population knows by heart, John 3:16. This beloved verse has been so quoted that most of the time we just pass right by it without even thinking of the true significance of it. Sometimes things become so familiar to us we forget the importance of them. When I was meditating on this verse the other day it hit me that this is ultimately one of the best Christmas verses ever.
Right about now you are probably scratching your head to see where I came up with that thought. Read it slowly with new eyes. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." Is Jesus not the ultimate, best gift to the whole world ever? We, even non-Christians, give gifts at Christmas in honor of His birth. A birth that only came about because "God so loved the world, that He gave!" Because God so loved the world, He gave us His only begotten Son, so if we accept Him as our personal Savior we can have eternal life. God loved--God gave--we have life eternal!
Without this gift there would be no reason to celebrate Christmas. Hence, this becomes one of my new favorite Christmas verses.
